Keratoconus Diagnosis & Treatment from Grange Vision

Blue eyes with keratoconus

Keratoconus is an eye disease of which the cornea thins and bulges into a cone shape. This irregular shape deflects light as it enters the eye and causes blurred or distorted vision. The eye disease typically starts during a person’s teen years and can appear in one or both eyes.

What are the Symptoms of Keratoconus?

There are a handful of symptoms linked to keratoconus. Symptoms can first appear as early as puberty or in late teen years.

Contact our Milwaukee eye doctor if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Double vision
  • Kayser-Fleischer ring, or ringed discoloration around the iris
  • Astigmatism
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Nearsightedness

Can Keratoconus be Treated or Cured?

Keratoconus cannot be completely cured, but there are several options to help with seeing clearly:

  • Soft contact lenses (with hydrogel: gel-like plastic & water)
  • Artificial tears
  • Scleral contact lenses
  • Corneal transplant

In keratoconus’ mild form, glasses or contact lenses might be all you need. If it progresses, you may require more complex care. Grange Vision provides all-inclusive eye exams and treats patients with keratoconus. Take care of your eyes and see clearly!
